Lemon Balm- This Mint family plant is sunny and delicious. It calms the nervous system while easing stomach tensions. It is called the herb of good cheer for how well it helps ease sadness and depression.
Rose Every rose has its thorn (except for some modified hybrid species) and even the thorns of most species of this symbol of love have medicinal properties. Full of nutrients the rosehip (calyx) boosts the immune system by providing a rich source of vitamin C and B vitamins are the nutritional prize found in the petals.
Hawthorn Berrys are the heart’s fruit. They nourish and regulate and give a gentle hug or cheer of encouragement to our heart both physically and emotionally. My favorite way to enjoy Hawthorn berries is to infuse them into a nice quality red wine vinegar and drink 1tsp in a glass of warm or room temperature water 2 or 3 times a day.
Scullcap -Seriously sometimes my mind won’t shut up and it feels kind of like I’m going in circles having conclusions that lead to questions that lead to questions and conclusions circling around and getting nowhere with great determination. Skullcap is my tension release to stop circular thoughts. It also brings some relaxation to tight muscles and lfts some sadness through nourishment to the nervous system. I especially love it for that time before bed when the thoughts become so aI’m ctive.
Other herbs I call upon in times of despair
Valerian– there was a time I showed up on one of my herb teacher’s doorsteps crying and scared. I had no hope no faith no security. Some how (long story) I had come completely unraveled and my anxiety was skyrocketed to a million. She gave me some valerian tincture among other things (flower essences, aromatherapy, talk therapy and hot tea) taking the tincture by the drop every few minutes and when things got tense is the best thing that got me through those months of regaining security and faith in the universe. For some people though valerian will trigger nervousness and alertness so be aware if this plant is right for you. (Some folks are more suited toward hops)
St John’s Wort evens things out. Brings it to medium. 2-4 droppers 2-4 times a day can stabilize mood swings. Please note that St Johns wort has a tendency to negate the effects of birth control pills and prolonged use internally could cause skin sensitivity to sunshine
